Three Ways to Treat a Gummy Smile

When you smile, you may notice the amount of gum that you have. too much gum tissue that displays when you start to smile, does affect the confidence that you have and may discourage you from showing off those white teeth. But it is treatable, and with the right dental team, you can get the treatment necessary for a truly gummy smile.

What is It?

This is basically when you have more than 2 millimeters of um, and there are a lot of causes of this.

They include the following:

  • The eruption of the teeth when a person was young
  • A downward movement of the teeth that are upwards, or too much growth near the upper jawbone
  • A short or overactive kind of lip muscle, such as your levator anguli oria, or the levator labii superioris, that will pull the lip into an upward motion.

If you deal with this, just know that this is pretty common. Aou29% of the population suffers from this, and females have this most commonly.

The Treatments

You’ve got a few treatments for gummy smiles that a dentist can do. They’ll diagnose your exact causes and give you a treatment option. Here are the three most common ways to treat a gummy smile.

The first, is corn lengthening, which is where the excessive tissue in the gums is then removed, to expose a lot more of the tooth, and they also sculpt this too, in order to make your gumline a lot higher. It’s usually performed by what’s called a periodontist.

This also can be done in the form of calling it other things, including gingivectomy, which is a removal of the tissue in excess, osseous surgery, which is where you remove the bone that’s extra, and from there, shape your jawbone.

When this is completed, they’ll also see how much excess gun you’ll have.

The second thing that they do is a botulinum toxin injection, or Botox. This is usually used to smooth out facial wrinkles, but it can treat gummy smiles.

It usually is something that is good for overactive muscles in the lips. Usually in this instance, you should inject this into tiny doses so that you don’t contract the lip muscles too much, which may have the opposite effect that you want.

Usually, this is done every 30-6 months, and it needs to be repeated. The people who do this are dentists, or doctors that are trained to do this kind of thing.

The third treatment that you can get is usually through orthodontic treatments, and you can have an orthodontist who is able to straighten out the jawbone and the muscles well. This is great because it can help with manually moving your teeth in an upward motion, especially if necessary.

“This is something that is best done by your decisions, and you should talk to a dentist to definitely make sure that it’s possible. Depending on the situation, they may ask for one type of treatment to be done, or another kind of treatment. What they choose to do, is ultimately up to you on what it is that they believe is the best option.

With that said, a gummy smile can be a bit of a worrisome thing, and some people may wonder if it’ll affect their body. in truth, it should not be a major issue, but too much gum can make it harder to clean the teeth. While not serious, the right treatments will make this easier for you to live with, so you can have a more confident smile in the process.
